On Sat September 19th last, at Kirwan Park , the 10th annual AIB Vs DLSP FC game took place, in memory for deceased club member Brendan Brophy, who tragically died at the young age of 42.
Brendan had been a stalwart member of AIB Rugby, having being one of their longest serving players and was heavily involved off the pitch on numerous committees. They say no one played for AIB while he was involved, without experieincing his welcoming smile at training or match day, and he was regarded as a true ambassador of the game!
In his latter years he also became involved with DLSP and made a considerable contribution to their club, in particular by bringing the clubs matchday programme to a new level.
Even after all this time, the affection for him from his many friends in both clubs is clearly evident, in that in its tenth year, such a large crowd was in attendance for this annual fixture, including four generations of the Brophy family. With over ¬320 being raised on a raffle organised by them on the day, for the Irish Heart Foundation.
It was an excellent and entertaining game that was to the highest standard by both teams, with DLSP stealing a win in injury time, to win 12-10.
At five wins to date for AIB Rugby and five for DLSP FC, the only question left to be decided is, who will win it in year 11 next season?
